So what?

With every industrial shift, we have experienced social changes. We still have agrarianism, manufacturing, and services, of course, so this new industrial shift will not change the essential things about what it means to be human. However, it will change some things. It already has.

Things to think about:

A. Ways in which this new industrial shift has changed social stratification and social classes.

B. If private property is obsolete, necessary, or a mixture of the two.

C. The ways we address social problems.

D. What we define as entertainment.

E. The way we define progress.

society absorbs the karma of individuals

bush may not ever pay for what he’s done.

but rest assured the rest of the world will as there is no escape from karma.

society is an abstract concept

it is important for us to acknowledge the intangible nature of the concept we’re discussing.

“society”, per se, does not “exist” – it is not a tangible thing. it is something deeper than that. it’s a concept by which we are ruled, to some extent.

i’m an individualist and i hope you are one too. at the same time as “society” is beautiful and magical in both concept and reality, “society” can be a constraint upon individuals. we all want to fight crime, but we must resist any impulse “society” may develop to restrict free thought, free speech, and freedom to pursue happiness for oneself and one’s fellow human beings.

IT people

The IT occupation is new and it is getting stratified. It used to be that you only found IT in certain organizations and the jobs used to be very similar. All IT people have to be generalists in some way but now their jobs vary considerably. This is one way that social stratification is evident in this new industrial shift.

What are the different tasks in IT?
  • network engineer
  • webmaster
  • systems administrator
  • programmer

Please add on – this is something I know little about!

In what types of organizations are IT jobs located?

I. job in small IT firm that provides services to about 100 clients.

II. job in department section of very stable corporation that does something non-IT

III. contractor in corporation of (II)

IV. entrepreneur

V. job in IT center at a college or university

Feel free to add on!

The Virtual Shift

Industrial Shifts in America: the invention of new modes of work. Remember that work = imbuing something with new value.

1. Agrarian (growing stuff)

2. Manufacturing (making objects for others’ consumption)

3. Service (serving others. a service is performing a task for others)

4. Internet (open and closed source information) This is an important shift because it allows work to be performed without constraints of geography. There are other constraints, of course.

Orientation for this page

Society is changing. Here is a good place to collaborate on some theories about how it is changing.
