I brought back the TimeLog.
It's just ycthere.com in an iframe for now. It will be less ghetto someday.
I need to redo it, so that it can interact with the MetaNotes page it's on.
I removed this from the homepage.
- log in button + facebook (and other 3rd party) auth
- A REGISTRATION FLOW
- toolbox (for creating notes and pages)
- catchall route for pages
- a search box
- an api
- a real home page ;)
Finally! Note Colors!
Click on the gear at the bottom of the notes to get the dialog that lets you choose a background color for your notes.
You'll see a checkbox there that makes the app use whatever color you picked as the default for subsequent notes.
This default is very ephemeral and is forgotten when you refresh your browser.
(It's a bit ghetto, but it's a start.)
Time...
Even seemingly simple things take a long time, and it's still rough.
In addition to note color, I snuck in attribution and timestamps. There's a bit of a timezone bug when you hover over the notes, because the server's time is in GMT, but the relative times (like 2 hours ago) are correct.
login button changes
The log out action is hidden under a dropdown now, because they shouldn't be in a rush to log out anyway.
a collection of tangents
- /user/sri
- /user/sri/first
- /user/b/MetaNotes - I gave sri write permission here
- /pol - everyone can write here
- /spex - plans for the #future
I forgot I even did this.
Did you realize pasting into a space automatically creates a note?
How should shared spaces work?
This is kind of a shared space. Both sri and b may create notes here, but b can't edit sri's notes and sri can't edit b's notes.
Is this OK?
How will this feel with more users in the same space?
HOW WILL I DO THAT?
That's the key question to answer in the course of a METANOTES session.
The God Within.
Maybe that's what the freedom of expression that METANOTES gives you allows to speak at last.
maybe that's the thrust of my entire career, giving voice to something deep that is within... first within myself, then realizing that everyone's got that same driving force within and that I want to hear from it whenever it takes the mike.
wishes.
What's the difference between a wish and a goal? I'm really not sure...
Goal just sounds more likely to be taken seriously. However isn't every wish you could make actually a goal?
There's this thing called the "make a wish" foundation. People don't make wishes unless they're in touch with something supernatural that could make it happen, however maybe that "something supernatural" is WITHIN.
GOALS
- get metanotes ready for beta
- create collaboration system for kaizen
- get some users
- see what happens
- start doing some promotion
- install business model of privacy
- get a million users to pay us :D
some other goals
- find winning stocks and profit
- get tinyvox up and popular
- get california plates on my car
- actually obey what I know and achieve understanding
- get unamerican working in LA with skip and erin
life in fremont
so very different my life here is... it's much simpler and metanotes being back is one heck of a good way to keep me occupied because wow, did I bring a lot of things I want to type up.
I guess nothing much matters to me except the success of metanotes right now because I can use the heck out of it in this sort of mental space of isolation that I love.
It's strange not living in LA because I see how that was a perfect simulation of a happy life. Everything set up so perfectly and yet nothing to do and nowhere to go... I have nothing to do and nowhere to do right now as well and that's the secret advantage, I've got nothing to do but make this work this time.
My life has to have MEANING again.
Goals give life meaning.
Without goals we wind up just going in circles, or backwards into regret.
The word "desultory" means "without goals" and that's to be avoided...
I can make notes...
...but I can't edit your notes.
That's an interesting dynamic.
I think you can edit mine, but I'm not sure.
FYI, I manually gave myself write permission to this space.
well!!!
ok... so very first interaction ruminations...
1) it's just so fucking awesome 2) the interesting fast and natural segue from iMessage interaction to metanotes interaction----> it's like we just picked up where we left off
images via URL pastey
what'd be nice is a "+graphic" icon
which then pops up a popup that sez "paste image URL here"
that way kids don't have to hit exclamation point paste exclamation point like we did in days of yore

a little sound when new note?
that way we can hear if the other person leaves a note and you're off on another tab... also a "noisy space" full of users may be interesting
i predict you'll have more fun with this
as will I...
this space, full of notes, would be sweet to have an amazing way for you to review them... perhaps a mobile interface as a list? that way you could just see the space as a list, and maybe even delete-to-you
I've been thinking about mobile UIs.
I figure a note should take up most of a phone's screen.
The mobile UI should have access to the note relationships too. (If there are lines connecting notes to each other, the mobile UI should be able to select a link and go to that note).
Some good news...
I don't have the code for the SXSW-era MetaNotes, but I found a backup of the database.
It has users and content in it.
maybe img wizard should be soon
i obviously fail at using markup... something about that syntax isn't working for me :D
maybe allow them to enter a URL for an image, a YouTube URL that will resolve into a player, OR an "embed" code from say an embedded Tweet, from the same prompt... basically paste something in here and we'll figure it out
GOAL: from screenshot to metanotes
I wish there were a SUPER BASIC way to...
- Hit a hotkey, select an image with crosshairs on my screen, and see it in a software interface (e.g. skitch)
- Then just hit upload
- And then just get a URL which I can then paste in here...
So sad that Skitch as a tool is now entirely dependent on Evernote... It used to do this, and that would've been like an IMAGE FIESTA. So maybe this OSX dashboard widget for IMGUR will do the trick because Jing sadly gives you an "HTML EMBED CODE" which you must then paste and strip down to just-the-image-URL if that makes sense. ok
skitch did not exist
back when we last existed... ...it was like a miracle and the "other half" of the metanotes equation that did not exist (an easy way to get images in there)
aaa, they messed up skitch
it now posts to a URL on evernote dot com and you then have to right click to get a link... drat ! that was one thing that i was looking forward to, using skitch to put images in here fast... let's see if there is another tool like that...
Jing!
aaaa, but it too does not return a simple URL like Skitch used to...
it's nice and does video too, which is pretty zany (will have to check it out)...
but you still gotta copy-image-URL, sigh
although no pesky limits on storage i think
Jing came very close...
sadly, the "HTML embed code" isn't the same as just a Direct URL for the image. oh well... #futurescreenshotapp #futurebookmarklet
